Another letter to President Trump

I wrote another letter to Mr. Trump. He hasn't responded yet… but I'm optimistic.

President Donald Trump
The White House

Washington, D. C. 20500, USA

April 24, 2025

Dear President Trump,

Yesterday you said that Canada would cease to exist as a country without the support of the USA.

I disagree. Canada will survive, and here is why. Canada has more land, more water, more rivers, more lakes, more deep-water ports, more coastline, more forests, more minerals, more traditional energy, more hydro-electric power, more tidal power, more agriculture, more rare earth metals, more fisheries, more stable banks, than any country in the world.

Canada has great universities which are free to think and study as they wish, and the best parliamentary system with the least influence by billionaires.

Canada has extensive research capacity on subjects like Artificial Intelligence, battery technology, healthcare, biotech, clean energy, ocean studies, agrifood and agritech, green technology, renewable energies, housing, and aerospace.

Canada’s world class manufacturers include automotive, pharmaceuticals, aerospace, plastics, medical, shipbuilding, hydrogen fuel cells etc.

60% of Canada’s energy comes from wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric energy, with more added every day. Compare this with the U.S. at 25%.

Canada leads in artificial intelligence, machine learning, biomedical research, hydrogen, carbon capture, desalination of ocean water, Arctic studies, space robotics, advanced materials for aircraft, quantum computing and nanotechnology for super computers and energy efficient materials, robotics and much more. We are a busy country.

Canada is also a trusted member of international organizations like NATO, UN, G7, WTO, and the OECD. Plus, Canada has trade agreements like CETA (European Union), and CPTPP (11 Pacific countries). Many of these successful countries do not have the resources which Canada holds.

Now that the United States no longer honours existing trade agreements, Canada will need to refocus on new markets and seek new trade partners. At the same time, many U.S. border communities, manufacturers, and tourist destinations will also need to find new markets and customers. Just ask them.

I understand that over a dozen U.S. state governments are suing the federal administration for the inconsistent tariff policies.

The interesting aspect of all of this is that these policies have divided the United States… but they have united Canadians. We will survive quite nicely.

Sincerely,

Bill Casey
