Letters from DA Casey

My father was D.A.Casey, also known as just “DA”. Although he was a very good father to me and my two brothers, Dan and Brian, he didn’t really know how to communicate with us as children. So he wrote us letters, we thought that it was normal, he would send us these letters on his business letterhead and sign them, D A Casey. He could type fast but only ever used one finger.
Over the next few days, I will be posting some of his instruction letters to us. Most of them are about how to handle boats and his lessons still apply. Dad loved boats and he passed that passion on to us three boys.
The first letter is from 1952 and was sent to my brother Brian. He was 12 at the time. Dad had just built an 8-foot pram rowboat for him. It was square on both ends and had a bottom that was nearly flat.It had very low sides. As I recall, it wasn t very seaworthy. Dad’s letter outlines the rules that he is to follow.
I especially like the line, “Please read this over carefully and refer to it from time to time so there will be no misunderstanding.” Brian was 12.
Note the business telephone number on the letter.
