Loathing, freeloading, and pathetic

glass shattered by smartphone with various emoji in the background
In case you missed it, communications between several senior officials in the US government accidentally went to Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic. This classified “texting meeting” about the planned U.S.A. military involvement in Yemen was to have the highest secrecy classification …. but instead was shared with a journalist. It is an amazing breach of classified information. The full text is long, but here are two sentences which I feel may be pertinent to Canada.

United States Vice President JD Vance says to the other participants… “I just hate bailing Europe out again.”

U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth replies exactly… “I fully share your loathing of European free-loading. It’s PATHETIC”.

Then they added a series of immature emojis, including a flexed bicep, American flags, fire, a fist etc. In the actual text message, Secretary Hegseth ensured that “PATHETIC” is in capital letters. Imagine. Loathing.

Comments like these are not quickly forgotten. Dismissing Europeanpowerhouses like the UK and France as "PATHETIC" and "freeloaders" will have consequences. I can only imagine the discussions in European capitals.

While the most senior U.S.A. officials are making these derogatory comments, Canadian Prime Minister Carney has already made it his priority to visit European countries, including the UK and France, to build bridges and reinforce economic ties. An unexpected consequence of these negative U.S. comments is that the countries now targeted for U.S. derogatory comments are banding together to talk about enhancing the relationships and exploring new economic and defense opportunities. They will be significant.

At first, it appeared that Canada was the only focus of such disrespectful comments from the U.S. administration, and it was disappointing that Great Britain and even King Charles did not voice support for Canada. However, now that U.S. senior officials have revealed their lack of respect for their allies in the Yemen battle, Canada is no longer alone on the U.S. target list of disrespected countries. Canada is now joined by the entire European Union, Greenland, and Panama.

Fortunately, it appears that the criticized countries are coming together to strengthen democratic values, defence, and economic ties. Canada will play a key role as these plans unfold.

For a more complete report on this breach of classified information, one source is to Google “5 revelations from Trump administration war plan texts.” The story continues to unfold and will have significant ramifications.
