Prime Minister Carney down on the farm

On Monday I had the opportunity to attend the Prime Minister Mark Carney/Candidate Alana Hirtle campaign event at the Lorraine Farm near Truro. It was just a great event, but a few things stood out for me.
Perhaps the part of the event that impressed me the most was Mrs. Carney. I had not met her previously, and I found her very personable, interested, and involved. She has a PhD in economics and focuses on environmental issues and energy issues. She has held senior roles in charitable organizations and even performed agricultural research in Africa. She has published several papers and studies on environmental issues and international development.
“Down on the farm” near Truro, she was very comfortable meeting complete strangers and seemed to enjoy the experience. It appeared that she could discuss any subject that came up and didn’t hesitate to be part of the discussion, always with a smile. She will be a huge resource for Prime Minister Carney as he faces the challenges ahead.
The second part of the event that I found unique was Prime Minister Carney playing hockey in the driveway with two dozen minor hockey players. He laced up his red sneakers and dove right in. He was obviously enjoying himself, and it reminded me of his visit to Amherst, where he engaged with some of the younger folk at his meeting. Even with adult voters waiting to speak with him, he took extra time to chat with the kids, and he obviously enjoyed it.
Finally, every time I listen to Mark Carney, I get a little nugget. At the farm, he repeated that Canada is a target of the current U.S. administration. He said that Canada will be stronger than ever and will win this conflict. I have heard him say this before, but the line that connected with me was when he said, “President Trump has divided the United States… but he has united Canada.” I love it.
